What goes into our jewelry

Every product page details materials and details clearly.

Alaska Rugged Wear jewelry is handmade in Juneau. Durability is the line—pieces built for everyday wear, heavy hiking, kayaking, and the outdoors, with rich warm colors and reasonable prices. Many pieces use one or more of the materials below. Check the product page for the exact mix on the piece you’re buying.

Sterling silver

Sterling shows up on select earwires, hoops, and findings when the product page says sterling silver. It’s a durable metal that keeps a bright, classic look with simple care.

Care tip: Store it dry. Wipe with a soft cloth after wearing. A silver polishing cloth now and then keeps that shine.

Copper

Copper appears in wire wraps, hammered forms, and mixed-metal designs when the page lists copper. It brings rich warm colors, stays durable for real outdoor wear, and keeps handmade jewelry at a reasonable price.

Care tip: Wipe with a soft cloth. If you like it brighter, use a copper-safe polish cloth on bare copper to keep that warm glow.

Glass and beach glass

Listings may say glass, glass beads, or beach glass. Color holds beautifully in normal wear—coastal hues that keep looking good with a soft cloth wipe.

Care tip: Soft cloth only. A small pouch keeps pieces tidy when you’re on the move.

Pearls

Some pieces include freshwater or other pearls, as noted on the product page (including vintage pearl accents on select hoops). With simple care, pearls keep looking good for years of wear.

Care tip: Put jewelry on after perfume and hairspray. Wipe with a barely damp soft cloth, then dry. Don’t soak pearls.

Stones

We will provide an accurate list of materials with all natural stone jewelry. Read the description for a complete list. When we call a stone turquoise, it is turquoise. Jade appears when named on specific styles. Wipe clean and enjoy.

Built for real wear

Most of our jewelry is unaffected by rain. Wearing pieces in the rain can bring a local look and a natural patina over time. Copper and sterling do not rust. These pieces are made for heavy hiking, kayaking, and the outdoors. The only real restriction is heavy chlorinated pools. This is jewelry made for an active lifestyle.

Wait until sunscreen and bug spray have dried before you put jewelry on.

Handmade means unique

Because each piece is handmade, small differences in wrap, hammer marks, bead orientation, and patina are normal. That’s the charm of maker work—not factory-identical chrome.
